EVENT: San Francisco Marathon 2011
Analisa Naldi wrote -Schoolyard to Market is a youth entrepreneurship program in which students will grow produce in school gardens and sell it at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Students will create and execute a business plan and will learn directly from food entrepreneurs, local farmers, garden coordinators and other experts. In addition to classroom learning, the youth will actively work in the garden and will take field trips to local farms. Besides enjoying increased physical activity and exposure to fresh foods, they will gain valuable life and job skills, such as planning, critical thinking, teamwork, and self-confidence. The program is being launched during the spring semester of 2011 at John O'Connell High School in the Mission District and Life Learning Academy on Treasure Island, both high schools that serve low income populations. The program will be expanded to additional schools the following school year.
CUESA see this as sustainable agriculture being practiced by a population most in need of it--low income, at risk youth who rarely have fresh produce in their daily diet, who would benefit tremendously from the communication, planning and general life skills that come from running a booth at a farmers market.
