TITUS, CHAMPIONS, and Whole Child Leon have formed a partnership to pilot a unique program to children living in the South City community. Most African American children are attracted to football, basketball as well as track and field; however, competition is so high that it is very difficult to succeed at the highest levels of those sports. The South City Multi-Sport Club, a USA Triathlon recognized club, will provide children the opportunity to participate in sports in which they never thought they could be successful. It will introduce them to a new array of community people, of endurance sports, of water safety and leadership skills that the children may not have otherwise known. We hope that continued participation in the South City Multi-Sport Club will provide these children with opportunities, such as enhanced self confidence, access to college scholarships and opportunities that they may have never dreamed of. We will focus activities geared toward swimming, biking and long distance running. We will also provide positive role models and mentors offering support to the children in a community where these examples may be lacking. All activities, training and mentoring will prepare the children to participate in a Youth Triathlon at the end of the summer. In addition, community partners including Capital City Runners and Gulf Winds Track Club, will be donating running shoes and funds to allow for the purchase of helmets and bicycles to those individuals who complete the program.
