As some of you may know, I've been a competitive triathlete for some time. I joined Asphalt Green nearly 2 years ago in order to improve my level of fitness and become a more skilled, efficient athlete.
Swimming has always been my first love and having access to an Olympic-sized pool to train in and great coaches to learn from means the world to me. The added bonus is that there are many like-minded souls (who are far more talented and fit than I am) who share what they know and motivate me to excel and have fun in the process.
I remain grateful that there is a community-based athletic facility in my neighborhood offering a wide range of opportunities to learn and grow.
But what truly impresses me about Asphalt Green is that it is not a private, high-end sports club. Far from it.
Asphalt Green is a non-profit, community-based athletic facility whose mission is to simply offer sports & fitness to all New Yorkers - from all walks of life and all ages.
Through a large variety of free community programs.
In general, Asphalt Green:
• teaches swimming & sports
• provides structured playtime at school
• nurtures budding athletes
• helps seniors stay fit
Asphalt Green teaches public school children across NYC water safety lessons via their Waterproofing™ program. Through these classes, children learn not be afraid of the water and how to swim for safety and to build up their confidence in the process. Thus far, they have taught over 30,000 kids how to swim safely.
Asphalt Green offers a Swim For the Future Scholarship for children on the Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics Swim Team. AGUA teaches focus and discipline to young children as they learn to balance extra-curricular activities and academics so that they excel in school and achieve bigger accomplishments later in life as adults.
Through the Recess Enhancement Program, Asphalt Green provides structured, organized recess for over 28,000 children across the city.
Asphalt Green's Community Sports Leagues give young students the opportunity to participate in free organized sports. They offer over $300,000 for camp & athletic scholarships each year.
On the opposite end, Asphalt Green provides free fitness programs for seniors and for those from underserved communities.
The programs for seniors ensure that they they maintain flexibility (to keep the aches and pains away) and confidence & freedom of mobility so that they won't suffer any injuries from falling. The classes also provide the opportunity for seniors to make new friends and socialize so they won't spend idle time by themselves.
Given such a diverse offering of community-based programs, I've chosen to run the New York City Marathon for Asphalt Green and am asking for your kind donation. I want to do all that I can to ensure that all New Yorkers - both young and old, as well as those from underserved communities - have the same opportunities that I do. That is, exposure to a variety of fitness activities which lead to better physical and spiritual health.
