There is probably nothing in the world I hate more than running, except cancer. So here I am, training for a half marathon with my best friend, Natasha. We are running in San Diego on August 19, 2012 in honor of my cousin Scott "King of the World" McMurray, who battled cancer for 3.5 years. Though he's four years younger than me, I've spent my life looking up to him. He was the bravest kid I knew (even before he had to face cancer) - always running ahead of his more cautious sister and cousins (on one hike after a big rain, Scott jumped, laughing/teasing, from rock to rock across a river, as the rest of us clung to each other, fell in the water, and were generally terrified). Everyone wanted to be friends with Scott, and as my brother put it once, you were instantly cooler once someone found out you were related to him. Scott only lived for 22 years, but he really lived every moment.
So, in his honor, our team is raising money for two charities - St. Baldrick's Foundation (www.stbaldricks.org), which funds research to cure childhood cancers; and The Pinwheel Project (www.thepinwheelproject.com), another nonprofit dedicated to "giving hospitalized kids a reason to smile." Through The Pinwheel Project, Scott learned to sky-dive, and as you can see in the picture, The Pinwheel Project absolutely gave him a reason to smile.
Any amount you can donate will be very much appreciated, and will go to great causes. Good thoughts will be just as appreciated!
