Seattle Adaptive Sports is a place where youth and adults with physical disabilities from the Puget Sound area can find sports and recreation. It is not a fancy place.....but IT is the place where we find a friend, can find success, and work up a sweat. The dedicated staff from Director to Coach are all volunteers who find fulfillment in our motto.....'life changing moments through sports'.
Our athletes tell us that this is the place where they find normalization similar to their peers or that they had experienced before their accident; build confidence, self-esteem, independence, success and empowerment through setting and reaching goals; create a network of support, resources, and friendships; and where an elite athlete can earn a college sports scholarship and/or become a Paralympian on the world stage.
We are a group of 100+ youth, adults and mentors who couldn't think of another place to be than a team practice each week and yet, the numbers we touch in the community is the most impactful to changing our lives. Parents, siblings, spouses and extend family experience along with our athletes the independence created by finding 'something I can do' through sports and being with others working for the same goals. As well, Seattle Adaptive Sports athletes put on exhibition games with high schools, at sporting events or for corporations where they 'show off' their ability, rather than being seen as disabled. These experiences change the way our athletes are accepted in their community and opens the doors to employment.
From a teenager ‘hangout’ with friends, to a pickup game, to competition at the National Championships, these athletes find the action they need:

Funds raised help greatly to keep a place to gather, provide the equipment to play a sport, repair old equipment, host an annual tournament and keep our storage. Raising more funds would help a team compete at a tournament or help move us closer to having the most needed paid staff for our growing organization. The need for more activities and opportunities for the growing number seeking to be active is becoming difficult with the few dedicated volunteer staff we have. Our greatest need is a part-time programs manager and part-time director to facilitate funding, facilities and fun.
