Elana Evans' Fundraiser:

Saving Sea Turtles: Education and Beach Monitoring in Pedasí, Panama

Elana Evans

We are two university students from McGill and are currently in Panama working on a internship with a group of local volunteers from the town of Pedasí who are dedicated to the conservation of the five nesting sea turtle populations in the area; they include the Loggerhead sea turtle, Olive Ridley sea turtle, Hawksbill sea turtle, Green sea turtle and the Leatherback sea turtle.

There are many treats to these marvellous marine creatures, including entrapment in industrial fishing nets, oceanic pollution, coastal development and egg poaching. In Pedasí, local volunteers have committed to hosting educational seminars on the importance of sea turtle conservation for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems and to monitoring the beaches throughout the nesting seasons to better understand the current state of the sea turtle populations in the Pedasí region.

We have designed informative brochures which we would like to have printed for the group. These will be used for identifying turtles during night monitoring sessions and education purposes.

Your donation will help cover the cost of printing these documents and any additional money left over after printing will go to purchase gloves, red light headlamps and clipboards that the volunteers use during their monitoring runs.

This is a community initiative to save some of the oldest and most endangered marine species. Your donation means a lot to the volunteers in Pedasí who care a great deal about protecting these turtles but without your help cannot fund the supplies they need to get the job done.

Thank You!
