BENEFITING: ASIAN AMERICAN DRUG ABUSE PROGRAM INC
EVENT DATE: Apr 29, 2013
Ronnie Nakashima, who is now 61 years old, has spent the past thirty-eight years incarcerated for an offense he committed as a youth under the influence of drugs. After suffering a stroke in 1984, he has been wheelchair bound and partially paralyzed. For the past four years, friends, family, and community allies have mobilized and formed the Ronnie Nakashima Support Committee (RNSC). Believing that Ronnie deserves a second chance, the committee has been helping him secure legal representation. In addition RNSC has held a number of public events to bringing attention to Ronnie’s case and also to the broader issues of Japanese Americans in prison. It has garnered support from figures like Yuri Kochiyama and Warren Furutani.
Ronnie’s friends and family think he has suffered enough. We want him to live the rest of his life in freedom. We are raising money to hire a lawyer to represent him at his upcoming parole hearing.
After being turned down for parole 14 times, and nearly giving up hope, Ronnie reached out to AADAP, the Asian American Drug Abuse Program, which had treated him in his youth. One of Ronnie’s friends happened to be in the office when the letter arrived. This chance encounter led to the mobilization of Ronnie’s friends and family and the formation of the Ronnie Nakashima Support committee that is currently helping him secure legal representation and resources on the outside. If paroled, AADAP is committed to provide Ronnie with residential care and treatment. Other individuals and community groups will also help Ronnie find supportive counseling, physical rehabilitation, and community integration.
Ronnie’s parole hearing is coming up in April. A lawyer has agreed to take on his case at a nominal rate. After a series of fundraisers we are still $3,000 short of our goal. We are asking you to contribute whatever you can towards this goal. Every dollar helps.
Thanks very much,
The Ronnie Nakashima Support Committee
