BENEFITING: Sustainable Environmental Education Inc
See My Garden Grow is a startup program of Sustainable Environmental Education 501(c)3. Through this program, we will work closely with special needs adults to improve their lives by helping increase self esteem, personal pride, and sense of ownership and control over their environments through horticultural therapy-like techniques.
The gardening classes will be taught in sunny Southern California's town of Whittier by master gardener and hall-of-fame gardening radio show host Nick Federoff. The pilot class in 2012 was met with enthusiasm from students and caregivers alike; parents and caregivers applauded the program and said once it launched, it would never lack students
This program is desperately needed within the special needs community, and especially Whittier and surrounding regions, which have a large concentration of adults with special needs. Government funding for educational programs declines drastically or disappears after a student turns 22. Far too many students are then placed in day programs that are essentially adult day care offering little mental stimulation and lots of "busy work". These programs are tailored to keep students busy but don't really address the needs for self-esteem, pride and sense of control over their lives.
This money will go toward purchasing supplies like specialized planters, water, plants, and soil for the year, as well as special facilities for use by wheelchair-bound participants. We will teach 2 semester-long sessions over the course of the year, with a morning and afternoon session of 30 students each.
Our goal for this campaign is $10,000. Our overall need to launch the program is $113,000, which we are seeking through foundations and government funding; however, many of these sources do not provide "seed" money for startup programs, and want to see that the organization in need of funding is making other efforts to raise money, and putting its time and effort into making its program a success. This campaign is a first step toward that, and anything raised will bring us a step closer to receiving full funding from grant-giving organizations and developing donor relationships that will continue to sustain this important program, and bring us a step closer to changing the world around us.
Thank you so much for anything you can contribute to our campaign! And if you are not able to financially contribute, it would be wonderful and much appreciated if you could help spread the word about our campaign and our mission! Hugs and a High Five! :)
