Selia's 24th Birthday Wish for FLYY
Organized by: Selia Yang
EVENT DATE Sep 11, 2014
Hi Everyone! This year I will be turning 24 on September 11, 2014. The past few years I have been fundraising for Charity:Water and Pencils of Promise (which I still greatly support), and this year I wanted to go local.
This year I have been introduced to an organization that I have come to LOVE and it's called FLYY (Foward Learning Youth and Young Adults). They are located in Madison, WI and I feel they provide everything that is needed to help youth and young adults and their families to better their life.
FLYY is "A non-profit, experiential education organization offering wilderness expeditions, parent skills and support groups, and community-based aftercare. Our vision is a community where people are able to realize their full potential in spite of social, economic, and behavioral obstacles."
What I love about this organization is that they have three parts to their service
1. They work with the youth and take them on a 25 day wilderness back packing expedition.
2. While the students are on the expeditions, Parent support/education groups are required of the parents to attend. They receive a workbook similar to their children so that at the end of the program the parent(s) and child will have the same language of communication and hopefully will be able to better their relationship. At this time, the parents get to share their thoughts and feelings about their children to each other and then learn tools are on how to better communicate and how to have a better relationship with their child.
3. Aftercare for the families are provided by FLYY whether it be individually or for the family.
How this program works is the FLYY staff takes a group of candidates to Northern Minnesota for a 25 day backpacking expedition outdoors. While they are on this course they are learning ways to realize their full potential as a person.
“FLYY’s programming is grounded in principles of restorative justice and a belief that people:
•Can change their lives with proper guidance, support, an optimistic attitude, and a cohesive and safe group environment.
•Deserve a fair chance at changing their default behaviors, perspectives, coping skills, and attitudes.
•Can push themselves past their perceived physical, mental, and emotional limits. Ideally, they will then be able to apply their newly acquired knowledge to their home environments.
•Deserve respect and dignity while they are trying to break old habits and learn new alternatives.”
My goal this year is $1000 – that will provide FLYY to be able to give some scholarships to those who are qualified. If 42 people donated $24 each (because that is how old I am turning) I could reach my goal! Otherwise, please do what you can. Anything is appreciated and I am very grateful and happy that you helped!
Please tell others about this local organization and join me in making a difference!
