BENEFITING: L.A. Kitchen
EVENT DATE: Sep 06, 2016
Food waste occurs across the supply chain, from farms to markets to households. The majority of that food waste is perishables—18 to 30% meat/poultry and fish, 19 to 22% fruits and vegetables and 17 to 19% dairy.
L.A. Kitchen takes food that might oridnarily go to waste--from area farms like Alma and Capay Organic/Farm Fresh to You and local businesses like Semolina, Juicero and Belcampo Meats--and turns it into delicious, scratch-cooked healthy meals for organizations like Health Right 360, Housing Works, Homeless Health Care, Los Familias del Pueblo, the Los Angeles Ronlad McDonald House and more through their #ImpactLA program.
But they don't stop there! L.A. Kitchen also offers culinary job training to men and women returning home from prison and young adults aging out of foster care through their #EmpowerLA program. Many of that program's graduates go on to work in our city's restaurants, at hospitals, or for #StrongFood, L.A. Kitchen's social enterprise, which prepares healthy, scratch-cooked meals from L.A.'s seniors, children in after school programs and more.
We designed this fundraiser to help draw attention to the issue of food waste and help L.A. Kitchen achieve their mission: that neither food nor people should ever go to waste.
Our goal is multifold:
- Raise awareness about the issue of food waste in Los Angeles and beyond.
- Raise money for L.A. Kitchen to continue their efforts to reduce food waste.
- Help us spread the word by posting photos on social media of dishes you make using common household food that might go to waste with the hashtag #EndFoodWasteLA.
Donating is easy and every donation up to $25,000 will be matched dollar for dollar!
Share this campaign with friends, family and colleagues. Together we'll make a difference!
Food Dollars Wasted
It’s estimated that American families throw out 25% of the food and beverages that they buy, costing a family of four between $1365 and $2274 a year. Help end food waste by learning how you can help at home, and donate to L.A. Kitchen, an organization that uses food that would normally be thrown away to feed the elderly, kids in after school programs and others!
