I was in New York City recording the first phase of Celebrate Life when we were alerted that the first tower was hit by an airplane. My producer and I ran from the recording session and into the main area where those who were also in session had stopped to view the events of what would become known as "911." The song was preproduced and the evening leading up to the next ten days of remaining there, was full of charitable work with the volunteers who were trying to give aid to the firemen and all of the other workers that needed food, water, blankets, etc. The ash fell in the faces of us all as and I felt I was in an unawake, unreal moment in life. After ten days I returned to Chicago and began to see this event continue to unfold. Celebrate life was written to be used as a fundraiser for an organization who's purpose was to educate and rebuild lives in Africa that were ravaged by AIDS.
Today, in Chicago, I am astounded by the loss of life in teen aged killings. My thought on an evening was to simply listen, and then as I did, the song came back to mind. As an artist and founder of Bronzeville Diva who's mission seeks to preserve historical music and to use it as a model to improve the lives of those who enter into the music industry. The immense creativity, skills and innovation made by these history makers in music sets higher standards and valuse for us to get back to writing, producing and listening to music that can grow a healthier society.
This evergrowing need connects directly to the new production of the Celebrate Life Song Project, in bringing youth to re-imagine life through words and creativity. they will supply the world at large their snapshot of music and efforts to help change life by paying it forward in a message of mellody and harmony. It will give them a snapshot of how life can be working together as a unit and develope skills producing, writing and singing together that will harness a positive outcome through mentorship.
