EVENT DATE: Mar 13, 2016
On March 13, 2016 I am fortunate enough to be joining 2041's environmental leadership development expedition to Antarctica. I am trying to raise funds for Avani, a fellow team member from India
I was first put in touch with Avani through the 2041 foundation, and was immediately struck by her fierce dedication to help the environment and drive for translating great ideas into actions. The 2041 expedition team to Antarctica would benefit tremendously from her energy and fierce determination, and she would gain access to a global network of activists and boost her leadership skills.
Avani Awasthee is an impassioned environmental leader in India. At the age of 14 she launched a recycling initiative through a video that went placed n a national competition, and has been relentlessly fighting to reduce India's environmental footprint ever since. She founded her own NGO, Recycling Army, to spread information on how to recycle and clean her neighborhood. At first it was difficult to be taken seriously as a young girl trying to educate others, but as time went on and with the success of her video she gained confidence and redoubled her efforts.
Avani has dreamed of going on 2041's Antarctic expedition since she met founder and explorer Rob Swan in 2012. His organization 2041 aims to renew the treaty protecting Antarctica from exploitation for its resources. Towards this end, every year Swan leads an international group of environmentalists and students on an Antarctic expedition. The goal is to offer participants the leadership skills and personal experience of the Antarctic that enables them to be excellent ambassadors for Antarctic preservation and climate change.
For the last 3 years she has been fundraising, and has made great progress. 2041 has pre-selected Avani for the 2016 expedition, but still needs to raise the last portion of the funds by March 13. Any donation is greatly appreciated, and donations are tax deductible.
