EVENT DATE: Jan 01, 2014
Colombia is a country that has experienced an extensive amount of conflict in the past few decades and who is passionate about coming into their own in the global conversation. Education is seen by many Colombians as the means towards strengthening the country, as well as fighting poverty, a persistent condition inescapable by many. Currently, education comes with yearly fees, even in the public schools. In urban areas, schools are often overcrowded and understaffed. In rural areas, facilities are inadequate, schools lack textbooks or set curriculum, and teachers often fail to show up for classes. Most middle and upper-class families opt for private schools when given the opportunity, further widening the gap between the rich and the poor. Fortunately, the national government and many city governments have been increasingly focusing efforts and resources to fighting this problem. I am excited to be considered one of these resources. Through the program WorldTeach, I will be living in Colombia for one year, volunteering my time to teaching. WorldTeach is graciously covering my living expenses from January 2014 through January 2015, so what I'm raising is tuition for the program itself, insurance costs, and destination travel expenses. I can't wait to fall in love with and contribute to this beautiful country and the wonderful people in it, to be a part of creating global equality, and to give what I have to give to people who need it, with your help, of course. Know that your contribution means so much to me and I want you to be a part of this experience. For each donor to my cause, I promise a personal update from the in-country Colombia from yours truly. A personal letter, including photos if possible. For every donor of $50 or more, you are entered into the second phase of this adventure. On my return to the United States I will be releasing a chapbook on my experience and with your contribution you will receive a signed copy of the chapbook as soon as it drops. Be a part of this. Spread a little love.
