THE STORY:

When Meche received her acceptance letter to Berklee College of Music, she was so excited because she was going to be able to continue her studies in music at the college of her dreams! Unfortunately this dream was dashed against the harsh reality of paying the $40,000. tuition, which is far beyond what her family can pay. They have worked the numbers and find that by creating new revenue, like renting her room, they can just barely cover the cost of room and board for her. Meche is a talented singer, graduating this May from the Classical Voice program at her public high school, Ruth Asawa School of the Arts in San Francisco where she developed her love for opera as well as Jazz. She recently played the role of Carmen in her schools opera scenes production this year and has been singing Jazz with her mentor, Melecio Magdaluyo and the Latin Jazz band at school. Meche comes from the culturally vibrant, Mission District of San Francisco where her love of music from all different cultures was developed. She has sung and participated in many cultural events and has been an artist instructor in different community based youth arts programs. Her father is an immigrant from south America, coming to the U.S. as a political refugee and her mother is a public school teacher. It is so sad that a student as talented and passionate as Meche will be denied her dreams because her family cannot afford tuition.

We need to support young dreamers like Meche. Her talent and voice should not be cancelled because of a lack of money. I am sure that given the opportunity, Meche will contribute beautiful music to the world. Let's help her sing!
