St. Pete Beach SEND OUR ROBOTICS KIDS TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP!
Organized by: Jim Parent
EVENT DATE May 14, 2015
They travel in 4 days! Please help make sure they can eat while they represent us in Detroit against teams from all over the world!
St. Pete Beach is a small community on Florida’s Gulf coast. We are known for our great beaches, excellent beach bars and some of the best seafood around. We also recently regained an elementary school (called a “Center of Innovation and Digital Learning” by the Pinellas County School District.)
Last year our little Community Center added a Robotics Program for the afterschool sessions for local kids.
About this time last year I sent out messages and personally reached out to all the people in the St Pete Beach area that I knew, to lend a helping hand to the kids involved in the St Pete Beach Community Center Robotics class. In the class’s first year of existence as a team, they performed so well in local competitions that they qualified to participate in the Robofest World Championships in Detroit Michigan.
Here is a great video of what it's all about:
They are in lime green t-shirts; the St Pete Beach LT's.
With the generous help of local residents and business we were able to fund their trip (air, hotel, meals, etc.) using NO SPB tax dollars. Government is too big and too slow to get grassroots things done efficiently. The education of kids, our next generation of leaders, is something that benefits us all.
This year they have done it again. TWO YEARS IN A ROW, TWO YEARS OF EXISTANCE, THEY HAVE QUALIFIED TO COMPETE IN DETROIT AT THE ROBOFEST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!
We need your help to allow them to continue their learning of math and technology, and perhaps the biggest lesson to be learned; TEAMWORK.
This year they have qualified to have not one, but three teams compete. One Game team and two Bottle Sumo teams.
The kids, guardians, coach and Community Center representative need to travel to Detroit, obtain hotel rooms, eat, and have transportation to the competition.
Last year, as one of the youngest teams to compete for the World Championship, the kids succeeded in capturing 11th place. To do so they performed better than many teams from the USA and many teams who came from outside the US.
They (and I) ask for your help by donating what you can and what you are comfortable with for the wonderful combination cause of Kids and Education.
We did it last year. We want to keep it going. The new St. Pete Beach Magnet School is called a “Center of Innovation and Digital Learning” by the Pinellas County School District. My dream is to be know for more than beaches, bars, and fresh grouper and to continue to help St. Pete Beach lead the way for this next generation by supporting things like the SPB Community Center’s Robotics Program!
Time is short. Our qualification and invitation to participate in Detroit was finalized yesterday. The competition is the weekend of May 16th. Flights, rooms and rental cars must be booked ASAP.
PLEASE help the kids get to go to Detroit and compete! They have earned it.

Please help them bring home the gold to St. Pete Beach!
We know we have some of the best beaches in the world; I think we have the best kids too.
