THE STORY:

Hello! My name is Silvana and this is my journey to dental school. Before I share my story, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read this, I know I am not the only student out there fighting for their dream but I want to thank you for any time, prayer, or donation you may give me. I truly appreciate it. I was born in Lima, Peru and brought by my parents to the United States when I was 6 years old in search for the American dream. Long and tough journey growing up watching my parents work hard and sacrifice nearly everything to make sure I had food on my plate, a roof to live under, and excelled in my school work. I will tell you I have no clue how they managed working overtime for minimum wage in fast food restaurants and factories, while raising a child and keeping everything under control. No matter how busy they were they always took the time to make sure I was doing well in school, teach me right from wrong, and encouraged all my dreams. After 12 long years in the U.S. I finally became a Permanent Resident at the age of 18, right on time to start college. I graduated high school with honors and as a Dental Assistant in 2010 and thanks to multiple scholarships and grants I am able pursue a bachelor degree in Health Sciences Pre-Clinal, along with a minor in Business, and a minor in Science Education at the University of Central Florida (UCF). I am happy to share that my time in college has been one full of wonderful experiences which have allowed me to grow. To list a few I have been a mentor, resident assistant for the housing department, tutor, President/founding member of Health Awareness and Prevention Society, Honorary member of the Pre-Dental Club, taken part in research, raised money for several charities, shadowed and assisted multiple dentists, taught children spanish, and volunteered for multiple causes. Being so close to graduating from my undergraduate career, I come here in hopes to find help to continue going after my dreams. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be a dentist. I have never gone through phases of wanting to be a doctor, teacher, lawyer, chef, etc. it has always been dentistry. I believe my fascination came from when I was a young kid in Peru, the dental office blew my mind away with the technology and medicine. Lucky for me the dentist noticed my interest/curiosity and encouraged it by completely including me and educating me through my entire dental treament. I was hooked, and years later I am still pursuing the same dream. Attending dental school and becoming a dentist is just the start for the goals I want to achieve. Growing up and volunteering within the underserved community really opened my eyes to how much impact I could have if I used my skills correctly. Some of my goals include educating the community (as I believe in patient involvement), make going to the dentist an enjoyable experience by creating a welcoming environment, working for the underserved community, striving my best to one day do pro-bono work for those who truly need it, volunteer at schools to educate and help children who don't have access to healthcare, and doing my job with compassion and honesty. As you see my dreams are big and my passion is strong. I have worked very hard over the years to prepare myself for this next step in my life, to take the entrance exam, apply for schools, make the interview, get the acceptance letter, and do everything to become the best dentist I can be. I now come to you for help, in hopes that you see my passion and potential for this great dream. Attending dental school is my goal but getting there is going to cost me. Unfortunately the little money I currently make is enough to only get by while I am in college (food, gas, books, necessities), leaving me no room to save for my application process expenses. I have made this crowdrise account to help cover the costs of applications, entrance exams, transcripts, interview traveling expenses, fees, and the deposit for the place I end up attending. I can promise your donation will go to good use, and I can't even begin to tell you how thankful I will be for any little bit you are able to give. One day I will give back to the community and I hope you are able to see the fruit of your labor. Please keep me in your mind, and in your prayers. The race to dental school is not an easy one but I have the passion and strength to get to my goal and with your help I'll be a step closer. Thank You from the bottom of my heart, Silvana
