Sergio Needs a Van
Organized by: Garin Veris
My name is Garin Veris and I would like to help a friend and colleague of mine to purchase a new van to accommodate his travel to work each and every day. I played eight years in the National Football League with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers. Sergio has never had the physical attributes I was born with but he has overcome his obstacles and has created inner strength I could never understand. I have never met a person who deserves a much-needed and dependable means of transportation to get to work more than Sergio. Sergio Goncalves came to the United States from his native Cabo Verde in 1982, living in Rhode Island for five years before relocating to Boston. He has had dystonia and severe dysarthria since he was five years old. A strong-minded and goal-oriented young man, he uses a computer speech device to communicate and a power wheelchair to get around. After attending Bunker Hill Community College, Sergio enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Boston and graduated in 2004. He is currently an UMass Boston employee and is very active in the community. He attends as many community meetings as possible, which take place at different locations throughout the City of Boston. He feels these meeting are very important to shaping the community and build a better future for the community he loves dearly. Sergio serves on the board of directors of several organizations, including Project RIGHT, Quincy Geneva Housing Corporation, Boston Center for Independent Living, Commonwealth Care Alliance and Commonwealth Community Care. He is founder of the Marie Feltin Award Ceremony, which honors people and organizations who make life better for people with disabilities. Sergio says he has already achieved two of his life ambitions: to obtain an education and employment working with disabled persons, and to own his own home. Sergio does not believe in asking for anything. However, he is asking for your support in raising enough to purchase a new handicap van. His current van is 14 years old and giving him a lot of headache regarding repairs. He is looking to get a full-sized Ford E150 or E250 with necessary modifications to become a handicap accessible transportation vehicle. We ask if you could pass it on to your friends, family, and neighbors in hopes that they may be able donate as well. We appreciate any contribution you can make to help Sergio accomplish his goal.
