UPDATE: Since my original $500 goal was met in just a few days, I've upped it to $1000.
In November I'm traveling to India for two weeks on a yoga/meditation and service retreat. During our stay in Rishikesh (located on the banks of the Ganges in the foothills of the Himalayas), we'll be spending time in service at a small orphanage and an elementary school.
My goal is to load up a suitcase with supplies to bring to the kids and with your help, I'll be able to do that.
Ramana's Garden - This is a small orphanage, where we will enjoy lunch and learn about how this organization works to empower these children through employable life skills. They are in need of clothing, first aid supplies, and art supplies.
Helping Hands School - This is the elementary school we have been working to fund through The Village Cooperative. They are in need of school supplies, notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, art supplies, first aid supplies, clothing, books and games.
You may ask, "why aren't you helping schools in your own community?" and that's a good question.
I do support many local causes in my community and the U.S. I also consider myself a global citizen and believe helping one or a few people, no matter where they live, helps us all. When I visit another country, I want to contribute or give back in some way in exchange for the experience, the joy, the adventure and the inevitable transformation that occurs while traveling.
The organization I'm traveling with is a fair-trade company and committed to socially responsible tourism. You can read about it here: http://www.experiencethevillage.com/what-socially-responsible-tourism/
P.S. The picture of me is at Machu Picchu. Afterall, I haven't been to India yet!
