BENEFITING: SAVING GRACE K9S
Saving Grace K9’s is a nonprofit organization where we train rescue dogs as service dogs for veterans with PTSD(post traumatic stress disorder) and TBI (traumatic brain injury). The veterans in our program come to us in one of two ways. Either they have their own dog they bonded with and wish to have it trained as a service dog or they want us to locate a rescue dog for them for it to be trained as a service dog. Our program consists of the veteran and dog pair coming into our training center once a week for four to six months. We essentially are teaching the veteran how to train their own service dog. The dogs are trained in basic obedience, specific service tasks and public access training. The difference these dogs make in their veteran’s lives is perceptible in just a few weeks. Their bond strengthens and they become one as the training progresses. This is truly an amazing and wonderful union to witness. The veterans become calmer and more able to focus, some have reported they no longer have to take as many meds for their symptoms. Not only does change occur in the veteran, there are changes that transcend into their family life as well. We have about 20 veteran/dog pairs currently in different stages of training in our program. Our goal is to accept 5-10 new pairs every quarter. The cost of each pair is approximately $1500. We do not pass any of this cost to our veterans and all of the training, gear, accessories, etc are provided at no cost to them. We believe they have paid a huge price already for defending our freedom, they should not have to pay the price to help themselves become functioning members of society again. All of our funding is secured from grant requests, personal donations and sales proceeds in our retail store.
