Serving Peru through MEDLIFE
Organized by: Paige Bamonto
EVENT DATE Jan 12, 2015
Hey everyone! My name is Paige and currently go to school at Virginia Tech. This January, I plan to go on a service trip to Cusco, Peru with my Service Sorority, Chi Delta Apha. During the trip, I will be working in orphanages and mobile clinics. I cannot wait to venture through this experience and be able to serve others in a new way. My goal is to raise $1,700 in order to make my trip possible so if you could share, donate, or support me in any way I could not thank you enough!
The largely indigenous population of Cusco, Peru and its surrounding communities continue to live in extreme poverty. In the rural mountainside, roads are often unpaved and unsafe, schools are stocked with only the most basic teaching supplies, and the nearest hospital may be up to two hours
away by car. The residents of Cusco and its surrounding territory strongly identify with the indigenous Quechua culture, and the economy relies heavily on agriculture. Heavy rains and earthquakes frequently produce further hardships, as evidenced by the January 2010 flooding, which wiped out roads, utility grids, and structures alike. Not spared from the destruction were
many of the area's few medical clinics.
MEDLIFE believes that in order to improve the overall health and welfare of families and communities in need, a comprehensive approach is needed. With this goal in mind, MEDLIFE seeks to deliver aid through three broad avenues: Medicine, Education, and Development. MEDLIFE divides donations into two funds, the MEDLIFE Fund, which dedicates 100% of every donation toward building sustainable development projects for poor communities, and the Mission Fund which is the broadest kind of giving to MEDLIFE and helps MEDLIFE accomplish its overall mission by funding logistical and operational expenses.
My goal is to raise $900 to get to Peru and $800 for MEDLIFE. If you feel inclided to help my ambitions to go to Cusco and to support MEDLIFE, please donate here.
Thank you all for the love and support throughout this process!
