Sewing Center Mombasa/Producing DFG Kits
Organized by: Carrie Grubb
EVENT DATE Oct 08, 2016
We are OPENING a sewing center in Mombasa, Kenya. End Goal: EDUCATION: KEEPING GIRLS IN SCHOOL "Teach them and let them govern themselves." The children are the solution to struggling countries'. Rather than coming in and providing everything for them, helping the children become educated is a better answer! The main purpose of SCM is to produce Days for Girls Washable Menstrual Hygiene Kits to give to girls of age in Kenya. - Girls will be able to attend school during the week of their period, so they can keep up with their peers and remain in school - Health and sex Education is included when the girls are given a kit - Teach women in the community at the sewing center a skill they can keep and earn a living - Provides income to families who are in need - Builds the economy of the developing country by using local supplies - Many more kits are accessible than the option of bringing them from out of country (go from 500 kits every 6 months to 5000 kits a month) This project is to kickstart the program and train a PILOT team of women for 3 months, to work out the kinks and prepare to bring in several teams. The money is for the equipment and materials for the 3 months trial. All equipment will be kept at the sewing center for future use as well. To be purchased in USA and taken over: Rotary Cutter $15, Cutting Mat $50, Ruler $15, DFG Die Cut and plastic $135, GO! Machine $300, 2 snap machines $160, Misc Tools $80, Templates $20, PUL Fabric - $390, Tags, Training Supplies and posters $750 Once in Kenya the rest of the materials to make the kits will be purchased. Previous cost to make a DFG Kit with Kenya supplies was $10 a kit. We are setting out to bring the cost down considerably but for now we are basing our cost on $10 a kit. Our goal is to make 300 kits in the next 3 month trial. 300 kits at $10 = $3000. (when the cost comes down we will forward the remaining funds to future kits) Please check out daysforgirls.org to see what is included in a DFG Kit and what education is required before we give one to a girl. The Sewing Center building and 15 sewing machines have been provided by Good Life Orphanage (GLO). This project would not be sustainable without their support.
