We live in a time when it is nearly impossible to not have been affected by breast cancer in some way, whether personally or through our friends and family. This year, more than 8,000 Michigan women will be diagnosed with breast cancer; of those women, 2,000 will exhaust their personal financial savings during treatment. About 2,400 will lose their jobs due to time off of work during treatment and recovery, and more than 800 will declare bankruptcy.
Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She is a single mom taking care of a 5 year old daughter while working full time. After using her vacation and sick leave for time off during her treatment, Kay turned to the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which protected her job for 12 weeks while she continued to recover from her first surgery and prepare for her second. In the 11th week, her employer contacted her and asked if she was returning to work after the 12th week. She reminded them of her upcoming surgery and stated that she was not able to return to work yet. They then informed her that if she did not return to work after the 12 week, she was fired.
Kay now found herself without income or health insurance. Before long, she lost her apartment and had to move in with family. Adding to the stress of her illness, bills were piling up. Kay turned to Shades of Pink Founation for help.
Shades of Pink Foundation was founded in 2005 to provide temporary financial assistance to patients residing in Southeast Michigan who are experiencing financial distress due to the high costs of their diagnosis and treatment. We pay monthly household expenses such as rent/mortgage, utilities, child care, and insurance premiums so patients can focus their personal finances on their medical care. Each month, we provide about $20,000 in grants, helping more than 160 families each year.
At Shades of Pink Foundation, we change lives by helping Michigan families maintain their homes, keep the lights on, and insure their car so they can maintain their treatment schedule. What we do is about more than paying housing and utility bills; we provide peace of mind and help patients find hope in the midst of overwhelming stress.
Your donation will help us to continue our mission so that Shades of Pink Foundation is able to continue to help the nearly 200 breast cancer patients who turn to us each year. We truly appreciate your generosity and support.
