Shadhika is helping Buddha’s Smile School in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (www.buddhas-smile-school.org) build a dormitory to provide safe shelter twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for girls ages 11- 18.
BSS provides primary and middle school education to over 300 Dalit – or untouchable – children. Middle school girls from the region face great obstacles in their daily lives. Whether threatened by early marriage, rape, or trafficking, completing their education is always at risk.
“With a dormitory I want to really save the girls. After age 13, girls are tortured by society. There is constant pressure to take the girls away from their homes for marriage. An unmarried teenage girl is also in danger of being raped. Everyday more than 10 rape crimes are reported in Uttar Pradesh," according to BSS' founder, Rajan Kaur Saini.
The total cost to build the dorm and cover its first year of operation is $150,000. the first $10,000 will be matched dollar for dollar!
