The former ASP star and current big-wave master puts on the event to show the kids a good time through healthy competition and camaraderie. This season's Classic was graced not only with great surf, but also great surfers -- Kelly Slater, Matt Meola, TJ Barron, Torrey Meister, and Albee Layer all came out to support the cause and ride a few waves with the kids.
The Shane Dorian Banyan Keiki Classic is a definite favorite for all the Kona groms! To enter, keiki must submit their report cards when mailing in their entry form to prove a minimum GPA of 2.25. Contest is limited to the first 50 qualified keiki, 17 years and younger. To complete their entry obligations, competitors are required to bring at least 3 cans of food as a donation to the Kona Food Bank at check in. In return, competitors receive a contest t-shirt, their lunch ticket, a bag full of surf goodies and a chance to win many of the special perpetual trophies such as Surfer of the Year. The Banyan Keiki Classic is always a hit in K-town and usually means the crowd is treated to an autograph session by the top surfers in the world as well as an Expression Session during the contest lunch break!
The objective is to inspire the youth of the Island to plan for their future. By helping them the youth are helping their own community. In 2015, the Shane Dorian Banyan Keiki Classic also provided the opportunity for young athletes to compete in Nationals in California, Surfing America and various surf trips to Fiji and Central America. Through this event and these trips Shane's heart is to raise up the youth who are our future and encourage them to think beyond themselves while they have fun surfing.
