THE STORY:

Nikala Asante wrote -

Did you grow up in the SHAPE Center or has your life been affected positively by the work of the SHAPE? If you're a Houston resident, then you've probably experienced the loving support that the SHAPE offers to hundreds in some manner. Maybe you were educated in the after school or summer program. Maybe you're one of the hundreds who have traveled on the Freedom Tour through southern states with the executive director, Deloyd Parker, to learn about Civil Rights history.

Maybe your grandmother participates in the Elders circle on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Or perhaps, you just picked up a healthy organic fruit and vegetable box from the monthly co-op. Or, did you participate in a meeting with one of the over 100 organizations that utilize the SHAPE as a meeting space such as the Black Social Workers or Positive Black Males? Perhaps you even celebrated at the SHAPE during the Pan-African Festival or Kwanzaa festivities. However you became a part of the SHAPE family, we love you and we appreciate you.  Now is an opportunity to give back to SHAPE to assure that all of these programs and activities remain available to the community and surrounding areas.

Right now, the air conditioner is completely non-functional at the Live Oak SHAPE Center where our summer program and community activities are held. As you know, it's very hot in Houston and this can cause health problems for the elders and the children who participate in weekly programming.

Not only is the air conditioning needed for our own programs and activities, but dozens of people from the streets, use our facilities as a haven from the heat during peak summer months.  We need to fully replace one a/c unit and purchase 2 compressors for the second unit. The total repair and replacement cost total $25,000.  If you've ever had to replace an air conditioner at your home, you know how expensive these replacements can be.  Imagine how much more complex it is to provide A/C to a center open to hundreds of people daily with a full kitchen and computer lab.  This is why the replacement is so costly.

We sincerely need your help. Whether it's $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, or $1000 or more, please contribute whatever you can.  All of your donations are fully tax-deductible.  We need to have these repairs completed as soon as possible; given the dangerous summer heat, I am sure you understand the urgency of this request.   Thank you in advance for your contribution; we love you.
