BENEFITING: Dreams for Kids, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Oct 12, 2014
In 23 days, 18 hours, 26 minutes and 39 seconds, I will be running the Chicago Marathon.
I never really wanted to run a marathon. As someone who runs, I might have raised some banter about it in the past. My dad ran a few Boston's back in the day which was cool, but I couldn't wrap my head around the idea. In fact, the other day, I realized I would basically be running from my home in Glen Ellyn to Chicago. Crazy (though sitting on the Ike for an hour and half probably makes it seem even that much longer). So, why?
Dreams For Kids. (www.dreamsforkids.org)
I am a Dreams For Kids (DFK) board member. DFK is a 25 year old, Chicago-based non-profit. Our mission is to replace charity with opportunity for at-risk youth through service, leadership and social activities that inspire them to fearlessly pursue their dreams and compassionately change the world.
After about 6 months into my first board term, we are sitting in a board meeting and I learn that DFK has been approved as an officlal Chicago Marathon charity and will get 5 spots in the race. Nice, but at this point, we don't know who will be filling the spots. Couple weeks go by and still there are 2 open spots. I raise my hand.
Might as well be me. Sacrfice my body for the cause I believe in? Sure. I'll gladly run (maybe walk and/or crawl) 26.2 to bring attention to and raise money for this organization and the kids we serve.
Your support and recognition of our cause would be greatly appreciated.
