BENEFITING: Hands On Nashville, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Aug 01, 2010
1. I live in Nashville, TN and we recently were hit with a 100 - year flood that devastated the area. A lot of our locals were not prepared for massive flooding and although we have FEMA and the Red Cross assisting, for most it's not enough - and I want to help.
2. I have what some have called "quite the beard." Other words heard muttered in reference to my mass of facial hair is "colossal," rugged" and "dwarfish." I've been told, based on my beard alone, that I look like Santa Claus, Kevin Smith, Jerry Garcia, Gandalf, Dumbledore, Grizzly Adams and "that guy from ZZ Top" - none of whom I feel I look anything like (except maybe Grizzly Adams). And while I enjoy my particular style, it's been a goal of some of my coworkers to see me shorn - and they want to pay.
So I figure, if they want to give me money for something as inconsequential as facial hair, why not turn around and give that money right back to the people of Nashville who need it most? So I am doing just that via Hands on Nashville, an awesome non-profit organization with almost 20 years of experience with helping out here in the Nashville area.
I have no "goal," per sé... but i will say this: if a substantial amount is raised before September 4th, well... perhaps I can find another way to give back besides shaving the beard. :)
And it doesn't have to stop there, with my fellow coworkers. The more people who know about this, the more money can be raised for a great cause. I want to see about getting as much money as possible for my fellow Nashvillians in their time of need, so I want to try and spread the word - and I would like you, too, to spread the word as well.
For those of you who do not work with me, the concept must seem silly, donating money for someone to shave a beard... so try and think of it more as donating so someone has a bed next week... or a warm meal... or a chance to rebuild their life again - while someone else has their beard shaved in the process. Perhaps that will make my cause seem less ridiculous and more noble.
Anyhow, if you're here I hope you give. And if you don't, or you can't... well, that's alright, too. Maybe reading the synopsis of my fundraiser has, at least, brought a smile to your face. Either way, thanks for visiting and letting us do a little good in the world.
