THE STORY:

In honor and for the benefit of the children at Del Paso Heights Elementary School whom Shawn so dearly loved to teach, mentor, and enrich through creative engagement, his family and friends are establishing this sustainable memorial fund that will enable the students at Del Paso Heights Elementary School to experience creative life enrichment activities from year to year. Del Paso Heights Elementary School is located in a challenging part of the greater Sacramento area made up primarily of immigrant families striving to give their children a better life. These are hard working parents, who are often challenged with the English language, but determined to give their children the tools to succeed and realize any dreams they may have. The School does not have the resources that are found in the more affluent areas of California or the Nation, but the Staff, Teachers, and Leadership of this small Elementary School do an incredible job with what they have. Born on August 28, 1967 in Columbus, Georgia, Shawn was a beloved educator of children, and a prominent competitive swimmer who loved sports and everything outdoors. He graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and went on to earn degrees from the University of Iowa and double Master’s from the University of California in School Administration and Child Education. Before becoming drawn to Del Paso Heights, Shawn was the Principal of a school in one of the most affluent areas of the United States. Without question, he excelled at engaging, inspiring, and motivating both the teachers in his charge and the students he was responsible for. He loved his students, their parents, and the community of educators at his school. However, Shawn had an inner fire to do more, to challenge himself, and to make a difference in an unfamiliar arena. An arena not of privilege, but an arena of tremendous daily challenges and great need. This inner drive is what drew Shawn to Del Paso Heights and motivated him to excel with his students despite the numerous obstacles. Shawn realized from the start he would need to learn Spanish in order to communicate with his student’s parents…. He taught himself Spanish. He quickly realized the school day didn’t end at 3 pm, and spent countless hours with his students and their parents before and after school. The majority of his student’s parents didn’t have the luxury of taking off work for a parent teacher conference during the day most of the time. Shawn knew this and took it upon himself to be “on their time”. Shawn loved and was committed to his students over and above what his community ever expected. Words cannot express the respect, love, and admiration he received back from his community during his life, and now after his life. None of which he was comfortable with. Shawn educated, inspired, and care for those around him because it was the right thing to do and it was his core being. This is what this Memorial Fund is all about! To continue what our brother, husband, son, and educator of children (and adults) was so passionate about when he was alive. To inspire and engage through creative hands on experiences outside of the classroom. Experiences HIS students wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. Please help us continue Shawn’s legacy at Del Paso Heights Elementary School and in some way fill the void that is so sadly present with his passing at this very much deserving school. “To inspire each student to extraordinary achievement every day, an unwavering focus on powerful and engaging learning experiences that prepare students for college, career and life success.”

Shannon and family, my thoughts and prayers go out to you for your loss. Your Shawn lite up a room with his contagious smile. I love to see that he went on to be an educator and mentor to young people. He was always so nice to us younger siblings and Shannon's friends. Tara and I have great memories with him during our swimming days. Praying that Jesus will comfort you all. Sincerely, Holly 2 years ago
