EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Join Team Bowker and former Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton as we fight to improve the lives of those affected by cancer and Parkinson's disease.
About Amanda: I'm sure you are curious as to why I am running the Boston Marathon and more importantly, why I am running as part of Team Shawn Thornton. Running the Boston Marathon seems like a no brainer to me. It is a world class marathon taking place in a city that I now call home. A city as strong and resilient as they come.
The reason I chose Team Shawn Thornton is his dual purpose mission. The mission of his foundation is to raise funds to help find a cure for both cancer and Parkinson's disease. Unfortunately and not unlike so many others, I have or my loved ones have been personally affected by cancer and Parkinson's disease. My mother, grandmother and first cousin are cancer survivors. My uncle lost his battle to cancer. Tricia, my first friend and still my best friend, lost her father to Parkinson's disease (he is the handsome fellow in the tux).
My mom and Tricia's father, Charlie Keck, coached our tee ball team. The picture of all of us is in the slideshow. I am the tiny one in the front row with the ridiculously oversized baseball hat and Tricia is rocking her blonde locks in the back row.
The picture depicts two coaches with very different diseases and very different outcomes. One a caring (but cluesless about baseball) mother who would lose both of her breasts to cancer. The other a kind and patient (especially when dealing with injury prone six year old Amanda) father who would die before he could witness his daughter grow into the truly amazing woman she is today.
I will run with both of their pictures pinned to my racing jersey. In honor and in remembrance of two extraordinary people.
Please consider donating and help raise money to find a cure to both of their diseases. See you at the finish line! #26.2
About Shawn: After losing his grandmother to a 14 year battle with Parkinson’s and hearing the touching stories of so many cancer patients and their families during his hospital visits, Shawn was inspired to take the next step in his charitable efforts. He founded The Shawn Thornton Foundation with the mission to help cure life-threatening diseases, specifically Parkinson’s and cancer.
As the Foundation’s President and Director, Shawn works with his board of directors to improve the quality of life for patients and their families through various events and fundraising efforts. Shawn feels extremely fortunate for the support he has received throughout the years and looks forward to continuing to give back to the community that has always supported him.
