BENEFITING: SPRING HILL COLLEGE
We are traveling during Mardi Gras Break, March 1 – 8 2014, to Belize City, Belize. This trip is a part of Campus Ministry’s International Service Immersion Program, in which five groups totaling 58 students, faculty and staff will work with ministries in Belize, Nicaragua, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.
Our trip to Belize City, Belize will partner with Hand in Hand Ministries, an organization with the mission to transform people’s lives by giving them the essentials--water, food, shelter, education, medical care-- that they need to survive. Hand in Hand believes that every person deserves these essentials and that we are called to help where people are lacking the very basic necessities. To help Hand in Hand with its mission in Belize City, my group will build a 16 x16 house for a family who does not have adequate shelter. This house, though very simple, is a vast improvement from the shelters the families are forced to create out of scrap materials and trash. This is the ninth house that Spring Hill has built on the south side of Belize City.
Preparation for this incredible experience has already begun. Our group is meeting weekly to learn about the culture and the people of Belize and to fund-raise towards the cost of our trip. We believe through building relationships and getting to understand others on the most human level, we will be guided to a greater sense of serving others. Our college calls us to “become men and women in the service of others,” and we are proud to give our time to work alongside the poor in Belize.
Our immersion trips rely greatly on fund-raising and the generosity of family and friends. One hundred percent of the money collected will directly fund our efforts to work with the poor. It costs $4000 to build the simple 16x16 house in Belize City. The money we raise also goes towards airfare, room and board, and a donation to Hand in Hand ministries. The total amount to send one person on this trip is $1800. Each of us will pay one half of that cost and together we will raise the rest. This is a significant sum of money, but the relationships built and the impact we can make is priceless.
This on-line fundraiser is an integral part of our program. All of the money collected will be shared among all of the participants going on trips. This is part of our community-building and ensures that any student who wishes to participate in the trips can afford to do so.
No amount you can give is too small! Whatever you can manage – $25, $50, $100 – anything you donate, will make a difference! Even if you are unable to make a monetary donation, please remember our work in your prayers and pray for the success of these journeys we are making to serve others.
