BENEFITING: SPRING HILL COLLEGE
During Mardi Gras Break, March 1-8, 2014 a group of nine students and two faculty and staff from Spring Hill College will travel to Nicaragua . This trip is in collaboration with Spring Hill College Campus Ministry and Hand in Hand Ministries, the agency with whom we work in Nicaragua. While there, we will interact with children and work on building a home for a poor family in a barrio in Managua. A total of 58 students, faculty and staff will spend their break in Central America living, working and learning with the local residents in Belize, Jamaica, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
We have been meeting weekly as groups to fund-raise and learn about the culture and the people of Nicaragua. We believe through building relationships and getting to understand others on the human level, we will be guided to a greater sense of serving others. We are excited about getting to know the community we have formed at Spring Hill and the people we will encounter in Managua. Our college calls us to “become men and women in the service of others,” and we are proud to give my time to work alongside the poor in Nicaragua.
Our immersion trips rely greatly on fund-raising and the generosity of family and friends. One hundred percent of the money collected will directly fund our efforts to work with the poor. It costs $4000 to build the simple 16x16 house in Managua, Nicaragua. The money we raise also goes towards airfare, room and board, and a donation to Hand in Hand Ministries. The total amount to send one person on this trip is $1800. This is a significant sum of money, but the relationships built and the impact we can make is priceless.
We have begun fund-raising to secure the money necessary to perform this service work for others – and we will continue to seek ways to defray the costs. We will sell exam care packages, arts and crafts, and hold a Jambalaya luncheon. This online giving is a major part of our fund-raising. (Last year, $33,000 was raised from begging letters.) All the money collected from this fund-raiser will be shared among all of the participants going on trips. (This is part of our community building and ensures that any student who wishes to participate in the trips can afford to do so.) I am asking if you would be willing to share in the service work we will do.
No amount you can give is too small! Whatever you can manage – $25, $50, $100 – anything you donate, will make a difference! Even if you are unable to make a monetary donation, please remember our work in your prayers and pray for the success of these journeys we are making to serve others.
