BENEFITING: SPRING HILL COLLEGE
During Mardi Gras Break, March 1-8, 2014, a group of nine students and three faculty and staff from the college will travel to Punta Gorda, Belize on an International Service/Immersion trip. This trip is in collaboration with Spring Hill College Campus Ministry and St. Peter Claver Church, a Jesuit parish in Punta Gorda. St. Peter’s offers schooling and religious services to nineteen Mayan villages. We will be doing construction work on a school or chapel in one of the villages. At the same time, four other groups of students, faculty and staff will serve in Belize City, Belize, Managua, Nicaragua, Montego Bay, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.
Our group has been meeting weekly to fund-raise and learn about the culture and the people of the Belize. We are excited about getting to know the community we have formed at Spring Hill and the people we will encounter in Punta Gorda. Our college calls us to “become men and women in the service of others,” and I am proud to give my time to work with and for others in Belize.
Spring Hill College Campus Ministry Office has been offering these service opportunities to students since 2003. These trips rely greatly upon fund-raising and especially upon the generosity of family and friends like you. One hundred percent of the money collected will directly fund our efforts to go and work with the poor. We have begun fund-raising to secure the money necessary to perform this service work for others – and we will continue to seek ways to defray the costs. We will be selling Christmas wreaths, donuts and pizza, going Christmas caroling, hosting a Craft Fair and engaging in whatever other productive fund-raising events we can plan. Each one of us will also take along an extra suitcase filled with medical and dental supplies, baby formula and other much-needed items for the people we serve.
This online giving is a major part of our fund-raising. (Last year, an amazing $33,000 was raised from begging letters.) All the money collected from this fund-raiser will be shared among all of the participants going on trips. (This is part of our community building and ensures that any student who wishes to participate in the trips can afford to do so.) The total amount to send one person on this trip is $1800. This is a significant amount of money, but the relationships built and the impact we can make is priceless.
No amount you can give is too small! Whatever you can manage – $25, $50, $100 – anything you donate, will make a difference! Even if you are unable to make a monetary donation, please remember our work in your prayers and pray for the success of these journeys we are making to serve others.
