BENEFITING: Rebuilding Together NYC

EVENT DATE: Oct 01, 2016

THE STORY:

Help Rebuilding Together NYC repair Sarah Powell Huntington House (SPHH), a transitional housing facility that reunites formerly incarcerated women with their children.

With your help, we can repair the Sarah Powell Huntington House, including remediating a massive mold infestation in the basement. The mold, a result of flooding during Hurricane Sandy, is a major health threat to the women, children, and employees at SPHH.  Almost four years since the storm, the mold continues to grow creating a significant safety concern and eliminating much needed storage. Your support can make this a safe and healthy facility for its families and staff.

Rebuilding Together NYC will bring together volunteers to provide critical repairs and renovations to the Sarah Powell Huntington House.

Since 1993 the Sarah Powell Huntington House has been providing transitional housing for formerly incarcerated women and their children. SPHH is home to 37 mothers, 18 who live in singles units and are awaiting the return of their children and 19 whose children are in their care.

The Women’s Prison Association (WPA) operates SPHH and offers on-site case management, day care, recreational activities for children, counseling (for both mothers and their children), and assistance in finding permanent housing. SPHH is a safe, drug-free environment with 24-hour supervision. Most women remain at SPHH between 6 and 18 months. Women first move into SPHH’s single units or share an apartment with a roommate who also seeks to reunite with her children. Once a mother regains custody of her children, WPA helps the family move into a family unit within SPHH.

Women across the country are working hard to make ends meet often in unsafe homes and communities. More than one in seven women and more than one in five children live in poverty. More than half of those children live in families headed by women. Additionally two-thirds of low-wage workers are women working for just $10.50 or less. Many do not have a spouse’s income to rely on to support their family. In 2015, nearly 60 percent of Rebuilding Together’s homeowners and their families were women. Together we can change that, transforming homes and communities. Together we can increase the health and safety of their homes, and work alongside the women change makers in our communities.

What we do is more than just rebuild homes; we rebuild hope, communities, and the future of our neighbors.
