We are joining the Chicago Chapter or Cure JM to find a cure for Juvenile Myositis! Our youngest daughter, Shea, was recently diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM). This pesky autoimmune disease currently affects 2-4 kids out of million per year. There are currently ZERO FDA approved treatments for JM - this needs to change, not only for Shea but also for ALL the kids suffering from JM. Juvenile Myositis (JM) is a life-threatening disease which causes the body’s own immune system to attack healthy cells and tissues. It can cause pain, weakness, inability to walk and disfigurement. It can affect virtually any system of the body, the heart, lungs, skin, muscles, and more. But with support from friends and family like you, we’re getting closer to better treatments and a cure. Last year, Cure JM was able to fund research at 10 prestigious research institutions, helping to advance JM research at an unprecedented pace – including important JM research that is being funded right here in Illinois, at Lurie Children’s Hospital! Your gift now will keep that momentum going. Every donation goes straight to Cure JM, and over 91% of all funds raised go directly to research.
Our "Art Sale" has been a little dream of Shea's for over a year. As she's battled her health over the past few months, she mentioned wanting to have an art sale. We pulled together some of her classmates and began the planning process. This sale is our attempt at making lemonade out of a lemon. Seeing Shea focus on the bigger picture and working towards a small goal to be able to give back has brought some spunk back into her life. She told me tonight, "I really like my life, mom, even if I do have JDM". It's often the difficult paths we walk that shape our character and reveal what matters most to us. Shea's art sale is one step towards living fully!
