Our little island, Shelter Island, has a long running history and a very strong and supportive community. With the community's support, the sport of cross country was re-introduced to our school two years ago. Our boys and girls varsity teams currently number 21 athletes and our school also hosts a Running Club which attracts even more boys and girls from our elementary and middle school. We are proud to say that both our teams have been very successful and we continue to grow. The sport of running has taught us valuable life lessons: living a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, sportsmanship, the value of hard work, loving what you do, and enjoying the people you are with. The Shelter Island 10K and 5K runs are special to many of us. As for most, it was our first opportunity to "race" and discover our talents. As athletes we have been very lucky to meet elite athletes from all over the world and have gotten to know some of running's greatest American athletes at our 10K race such as Joan Benoit-Samuelson, Meb Keflezighi (Good luck at the Rio Olympics Meb!) and Bill Rodgers. The community has supported our team brilliantly and we would like to show our appreciation by raising funds for the many charities that the Shelter Island 10K supports such as East End Hospice, a group dedicated to respectfully caring for people of all ages with terminal illnesses, the Shelter Island Community Fund, supporting our community in a variety of endeavors, as well as the Timothy Hill Ranch and other valuable charities. We look forward to seeing you all at our race this year. Please support us in our fundraising efforts - any amounts are appreciated. Please feel free to share our link with your friends as well as the runners in your lives. And thank you !!!
