EVENT: SheROX Series 2012
I will be running the SheRox Triathlon with Team Hope to honor my amazing aunt Ames. Ames Chandler was a vibrant, adventurous, fun-loving woman. She lived her entire life just the way she wanted. She spent her career on the ski slopes, coaching young athletes. She was adored by all those around her and was a loving wife. She was always an inspiration, source of laughter and positive force in my life. Ames was the queen of Ole and Lena jokes...if you aren't from the mid-west, I promise they're worth googling. Any time I read them, I hear them in her attempt at a Scandinavian accent. Amazing.
Ames lost a heroic, five year battle with ovarian cancer this spring. Less than a year before, between rounds of chemo, we tackled double blacks together at Breckenridge. This disease stripped the most dynamic woman I know of her energy. I never thought there would be anything that could do that and I want to make a difference however I can.
When we found out Ames was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I ran this same race to support her. Five years later, a team of women who love her dearly will be running in her honor. My sister Chelsea and I have each pledged to run, along with Ames' widow and several of her dearest friends. If you are able, please consider making a donation to ovarian cancer research. We also accept support in the form of cheerleaders. :)
Check out my sister's site too. The money all goes to the same place, so feel free to donate to either page. http://www.crowdrise.com/sheroxsandiego/fundraiser/chelseachandler
Donations go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. The charity sponsors research focused on ovarian cancer. You can check them out at ocrf.org. Their main goals are:
- Developing innovative strategies for early detection
- Discovering genetic polymorphisms that increase risk for ovarian cancer
- Understanding the underlying genetics and molecular biology of ovarian cancer
- Identifying new, better targets for treatment
- Determining how to super-charge a woman’s immune response to better fight ovarian cancer
- Deciphering how and why ovarian cancer spreads, and how to stop it
