THE STORY:

Many people had suggested to me early this year that I become I candidate for the City Council. I had been thinking long and hard about those suggestions, when on June 25, 2011, my nephew, Marine Sgt. Troy Myrie was killed in Afghanistan. Troy’s death provoked a lot of soul searching and caused me to ask what else I was doing to make our country a better place and to make his sacrifice have meaning. Troy’s mother lives in Fort Lauderdale and his funeral was to be on July 8 at the National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL.

When I had been considering running for City Council I had looked at election history and found that in 2007 only 677 people of nearly 8,000 had voted in the election for this office. The right to vote and for self-government were among the things that Troy died for. I thought that my participation in this election would be a way to honor his sacrifice and that of his comrades. On the day I was leaving town for his funeral, I went to the Fort Myers City Clerk’s office and filed the documents to qualify to be on the ballot.

The function of local municipal government is primarily to provide for basic community services to make daily life safe and secure for the citizens of the municipality. These services must be done in a cost effective manner to minimize the tax burden on the citizens. Additionally, while fulfilling the responsibilities of safety and service, a municipality must maintain a business friendly environment. This means keeping costs like taxes, permits and service fees competitive with nearby municipalities, as of course businesses can and do vote, with their feet. Additionally, permitting processes should be both streamlined and professional.

Enhancing the business climate means more services for the citizens provided by private enterprise, more jobs and increased tax revenues from economic activity. A municipality that has created such a climate in this day and age can market its advantages in very cost effective ways.
