THE STORY:

Help Grand St. Settlement SHINE THRU hate, fear and violence with a light that refuses to dim.

We shine on in memory of loved ones lost due to violence; we shine on to achieve our goals and dreams, and we shine on to highlight the Arts, athletics, service and the community in order to break cycles of bullying and hate.

During the month of January, GSS will host a series of events to unite the community in peace and to honor the life of Raphael Sadonte Ward.

Last year, the GSS community was rocked by gun violence too close to home when one of our teens was shot and killed. Raphael Sadonte Ward, Jr. should not be defined by the violence that claimed his life and tried to make him a statistic; instead we remember Sadonte's comedic prowess, just as renowned as his trademark throw to make a double play: a casual flip of the ball to first base behind his back.

Arlene Delgado, Sadonte's mother, has pledged to help create more safe spaces for teens to escape the threat of violence.  "I’m going to save my son’s friend that’s what I’m going to do,” she said, resolutely. “Mommy's going to save your friends. You loved them? I'm going to embrace them."

And GSS is committed to helping.

SHINE THRU will promote teamwork, nonviolence communication, tools for transformation and inner strength and will work to combat destruction and negativity with the strength of a community united in peace.

Too many members of our community have felt the devastating effects of violence, from guns and gangs to bullying and abuse. Through education, a safe environment, support and positive and productive alternatives to dangerous and risky behavior, Grand St. Settlement works to dismantle the threat of violence in our community, and we need your help to bring SHINE THRU events – open to the community – to GSS.
