PortSide was selected to participate in NYC's 2011 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). This means that, during July and August, our TeenTeam of five will earn $7.25/hour, working 25 hours/week while finishing the restoration of the Captain's cabin on the Mary Whalen.
With your support five youth from Brooklyn public housing will have meaningful employment this summer AND PortSide's newly recognized tanker Mary Whalen will receive some needed restoration work.
In order to take advantage of this opportunity, we need your financial assistance: SYEP pays the youth salaries, and participating organizations are required to fund the other program expenses (in our case, field supervisor salary, renovation supplies and materials.)
PortSide must raise $16,000 by June 30, 2011 to offer this opportunity. In September, we will invite donors on board for a sneak preview of the summer's completed restoration work.
