My name is Russelleen Wilhite. I am a disabled United States Army veteran, a domestic abuse survivor, and now an aspiring community activist. As a resident of Anderson, Indiana, I have come to recognize that the issues that seemed so isolated and treacherous to me in my personal life is almost epidemic in my wonderful city. I have recently formed a community initiative registered with the State of Indiana, “Shirley’s Gift” and have partnered with Community R.U.L.E. non-profit, and the Veterans Administration of Madison County in the hopes of making a significant change to the community. As Shirley’s Gift and Community R.U.L.E. combine our efforts to combat domestic abuse, homelessness, and resources for disabled veterans, I want to thank you in advance for any contributions or donations you make for this much needed initiative. I have came to realize that I cannot change the world in a day but I can change the day of someone’s world. Our plan is to open our first homeless veterans housing facility by Sept.2016. While we do know that this will be both timely and costly we are up for the task at hand. We plan to seek donations from local businesses to aid in some of the items we will be needing. The needs to uplift, empower, and employ the men and women who have served our country have to be addressed. The continuing escalation of the homeless population in our city cannot continue to be flagrantly ignored. The decline of hope, the removal of self-worth, and the isolation caused by fear in the men and women that fought for our country has inspired me to begin to build a bridge of hope for those people in need.
