BENEFITING: POSITIVE INFLUENCE INC
Hey! My name is Ethan Genn, and I am a 7th grader who attends Booker T. Washington JHS (MS54), a middle school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I love sports and music! In the Jewish tradition, when a boy turns 13, he has a special ceremony called a Bar Mitzvah that officially welcomes him into the world as a man. I will have my own personal Bar Mitzvah on the 17th of September, in the year of 2016. Along with this ceremony, the boy must pick a special project about something that is meaningful to him and help the community by giving back to them. For my project, I chose a basketball organization named Positive Influence Basketball.
Positive Influence Basketball is a youth non-profit organization dedicated to helping the lives of youth (elementary school through college) through the wonderful, exciting, action-packed game called basketball. The tradition began at the Amsterdam Houses in the 1960's with a league, and many leagues have been created since then, including Positive Influence Basketball, founded almost 10 years ago by Mr. Andrew Blacks. This has made basketball a big tradition in the area. Positive Influence has a summer league which is based at the Amsterdam Houses, but in the winter-spring, they have a big indoor tournament at John Jay College for 11u, 13u, and 15u teams around the city, mostly from the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. These games are always exciting to watch, down to the very last minute. This was where my big connection to the organization was created.
What I have done with this wonderful organization spans a broad range of activities. I have volunteered at their games, taking pictures, keeping track of the scores using the scoreboard, and conducting interviews with the players, coaches, and referees. The league is not just about the scores and who wins, but the personal connection to the game and to the future of the player. In addition to all of my involvement, I have also created this CrowdRise account (of course, because you are reading this now). Because of my love for basketball, this great organization was a great match for a Bar Mitzvah project. Anything raised from my CrowdRise site will go to Positive Influence Basketball, and will help them to purchase uniforms, equipment, and pay for any other expenses, such as hiring referees or anything else that could make the organization even better than it is now!
