BENEFITING: CHICAGO ADVENTURE THERAPY NFP
EVENT DATE: Apr 10, 2011
I have never been a runner! I have always listened to people say, “Once you push through that point where you think you can’t run anymore, you feel like you could run forever” and thought, “Yeah, right!” Well, I am proud to announce, that I have come to like running these days. I actually find it very refreshing (with crazy grad. school stress and all). I’m sure part of it has to do with being motivated by my roommate and the Chicago skyline views, as we run along the lakefront path. However, finding the enjoyment of running as I am actually doing it still doesn’t come easily to me! It’s hard work! This being said, I have found another motivator…the non-profit organization I work for, Chicago Adventure Therapy (CAT).
CAT works with Chicago youth from some of the toughest neighborhoods by providing them with opportunities to experience the urban wilderness this city has to offer. There are so many components to this work - here are 2 of my favorites…
There is the environmental justice piece and allowing these youth to reclaim their city by providing them with outdoor experiences they never thought possible, given their marginalized position in society. Then there is the therapeutic piece that provides unfamiliar, natural and subsequently non-judgmental experiences like kayaking, rock climbing, cycling, and orienteering, which place the youth outside their comfort zone and allows them to develop new coping skills that they can use in their everyday lives.
I totally believe in what CAT does! Even the small things make a difference. I once asked one of the youth in a recurring program if they had gone sledding last time and he asked me what sledding was! I take a lot of things I experienced as a child or in life in general for granted! These kids are stoked just to sit in a kayak and it really is awesome to see them go from what they didn’t think they could do to what they actually accomplish and that adrenaline rush they get from it! I love that feeling myself and I think it’s so cool to see someone else experience it!
Now that you've read my story, I hope I've done my experieces with CAT justice and you wouldn't mind donating to this awesome cause! My goal is $500 and I would appreciate any amount you think is reasonable. Thanks for taking the time to read this and to donate!
