EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2010
Communication Shutdown is a global initiative to raise much-needed funds for autism groups in over 40 countries. By shutting down social networks for one day on November 1, we hope to encourage a greater understanding of people with autism who find social communication a challenge.
This is GLOBAL - you can participate in any country in the world, and if you join up/donate at the website https://communicationshutdown.org/ your donation will go to Research and Support in YOUR country ... this crowdrise project goes toward a US charity purely to spread the word about this fantastic event :)
CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA FOR 24HRS?
Social communication is one of the biggest challenges for people with autism. By choosing to shutdown your social networks for one day, you will have some idea of what it's like for people with autism who face this challenge every day.
Rachael Harris, a counsellor and supporter, who herself is on the autism spectrum, put it best when she said, "Electing to shutdown social communication mirrors autistic silence. But it also draws attention to the isolation and intense loneliness experienced by those who are impeded from connecting socially with others. The CHAPP is a powerful way to create a sense of empathy towards those on the autism spectrum."
Now, I'm not sure that I'll honestly be able to live without my facebook/twitter for a whole 24 hours BUT what I can do is pledge to increase my donation if I *do* log on LOL So, as well as my intitial donations, I hereby pledge to donate an extra
- $1 for EVERY time I load facebook, and
- $1 for EVERY tweet
I will be doing this from midnight November 1st 2010 (Perth time) until midnight November 2nd 2010 ... why don't you join me? :D
