Sickle Cell Doesn't Stop Me
Organized by: Marquita Gaines
Hi! My name is Marquita Gaines. I am 22 years old and currently following my dreams. I moved from Georgia to Washington, D.C. to attend my dream school, Howard University. I major in Journalism with a Minor in Spanish. It can be tough enough to balance school and work but I am doing my best, not to mention having health issues. I suffer from the chronic illness known as Sickle Cell Disease. It is a genetic blood disorder that causes my red blood cells to lose oxygen and 'sickle.' At my worst this disease makes it difficult to even move. However, I never let my illness deter me from obtaining my education. I follow doctors orders, take my medication, and receive 10 units of donor blood every 4-6 weeks. I have overcome many health obstacles and use my story to help educate others on Sickle Cell and the importance of blood donations. I have worked with the American Red Cross for many years to spread this message. By sharing my story they have been able to increase the number of blood donations and financial donations to their organization. I have created PSAs and given numerous speeches in an effort to show that I will not let my diagnosis limit my dreams. You can view some of my work for them here http://bit.ly/1qVEOeP http://bit.ly/1ss3wAN http://bit.ly/WZQ7peI am approaching my senior year and am short on finances. I only need $5,518 to return to college and begin my final year of school. If you are able to assist me, this will be one more reminder that there is no hurdle that I have successfully cross in order to do what I do best because…SICKLE CELL DOESNT STOP ME! Thank you!
