As many of you know, I've had a tough time with my marathon training this year and if you asked me just four short weeks ago I would have told you I wasn't going to run it. That all changed when Sheri made me go out and work a water station for one of our training runs, and I realized that I could do it. Since then, I've been busting my butt, and two days ago I ran 20 miles. I'm officially marathon ready, and am going to do this thing. While last year's marathon was about overcoming physical challenges, this year's is clearly about getting past the mental ones. Since I started training I've lost 25 pounds and am really proud that I've made it back. I've decided to once again convert this positive energy into helping out an awesome charity.
On March 18th, I will once again be running to raise money for Public Counsel, an organization that provides free legal services to the underprivileged. This cause has taken on new meaning for me this year because since August I have been working pro bono for Public Counsel. I represent a 19 year old gay man who has lived in the U.S. since he was 2 years old. He was deported to Mexico last year where he has no friends or family. Our client only speaks broken Spanish. A few days after being deported, our client was severely beaten by the police because of his sexual orientation. He fled back to the U.S., and the government attempted to deport him again. Two weeks ago, my team won his immigration case, and my client will be able to stay in the U.S.. Without Public Counsel's assistance our client would have had to go through this process unrepresented and would likely have been deported. That is why raising money for this worthy cause is more important to me than ever!
The reality is, the next five weeks of training will be very hard, and raising money for Public Counsel (and being accountable to all of you) is the kick in the butt I need to keep going. I have committed to raising $3,500 for this worthy cause. I'm paying my own entrance fee and training program, so all of the money donated goes directly to help those less fortunate. Please donate what you can to supportand my run. As many of you know, this is the only charity that I raise money for each year, and again promise this will be the only event that I hit you up for this year, so please help out if you can. Since they were so well received last year, I am once again willing to throw in some prizes!
- For a $25 donation you get assistance selecting presents for your significant other. (Let's face it, it's a talent).
- For a $50 donation I will make an extremely flattering/personally embarrassing facebook post to your page.
- For a $75 donation you get a signed embarrassing childhood photo of Pat Kennell (perfect for framing, dartboards, etc.).
- For a $100 donation you get a signed photo of Pat Kennell in the team jersey of your choice (Red Sox, Patriots, Mets, etc.). Also a great item to post to Facebook!
- For donations over $100 we can negotiate the embarrassing task on a case by case basis.
Every little bit helps, so please donate whatever you can.
A bit about my charity....
