BENEFITING: The Sierra Club Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Sierra Club Foundation
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
Sierra Club Outdoors (SCO) is helping connect people to nature benefiting both. SCO reaches across economic lines, cultures, and communities, to engage everyone including military and youth to explore and enjoy the natural world.
Your generous contribution will help support our new SCO program called the Sierra Club Youth Leadership Academy (SCYLA). The program trains underserved high school students to become outdoor leaders and community advocates.
The program works with underserved youth who show an interest in personal development and the environment. SCYLA develops leadership skills by exploring individual character in terms of self-awareness, self-control, motivation, and empathy. Students complete all the courses and exams to become certified as a Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors leaders. They will then be mentors and leaders on outdoor excursions for younger students. This training will also help them to become leaders in their high schools, colleges, future careers, and their own communities.
Sierra Club’s Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) provides opportunities for people with limited access to the outdoors – especially youth – to safely explore, enjoy and protect the natural world. ICO: is one of 53 ICO groups nationwide, run entirely by volunteers, who actively engage young people who might not otherwise have access to the outdoors in seasonal activities like camping, canoeing, hiking, service projects, and snow play. These experiences for these students are on a monthly basis and have life long impact for them from environmental awareness to newly found leadership skills.
The Sierra Club Foundation’s big picture goal is to end our reliance on dirty fossil fuels; reverse the social, economic, and environmental damage caused by global climate change; restore, connect, and protect healthy ecosystems so that wildlife and wilderness can thrive; and successfully transition to a clean, green, renewable energy economy that better serves people and nature.
As the fiscal sponsor of the charitable programs of the Sierra Club, we provide resources to it and other nonprofit organizations to support charitable scientific, educational, literary, organizing, advocacy, and legal programs that further The Sierra Club Foundation's mission.
