BENEFITING: The Sierra Club Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Sierra Club Foundation
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
I've always wanted to run Boston. It's been 10 years since I ran my last marathon and now that I've turned 40, I figured now or never! What's more, I'm running for a cause that's close to my heart that I know firsthand has a positive impact on tens of thousands of at-risk kids. Please support my run so Sierra Club Outdoors can get even more underserved people outdoors and create the leaders of tomorrow.
Here's a little background.... Sierra Club Outdoors (SCO) connects people to nature benefiting both. Reaching across economic lines, cultures, and communities, SCO engages everyone, especially focused on veterans, military families, and under-served youth, to explore and enjoy the natural world.
Your generous contribution will help support our new SCO program called the Sierra Club Youth Leadership Academy (SCYLA). The program trains underserved high school students to become outdoor leaders and community-minded citizens. SCYLA develops leadership skills by exploring individual character in terms of self-awareness, self-control, motivation, and empathy. Students complete courses and exams to become certified Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors' leaders. They will then be mentors and leaders on outdoor excursions for younger students. This training also helps them become leaders in their high schools, colleges, future careers, and in their own communities.
Sierra Club’s Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) provides opportunities for people with limited access to the outdoors – especially youth – to safely explore, enjoy and protect the natural world. There are 53 ICO groups nationwide, run entirely by volunteers, who actively engage young people who might not otherwise have access to the outdoors. These experiences not only teach environmental awareness and an appreciation for the outdoors, but they also give children the confidence to take chances and to develop their own leadership skills.
If you care about kids, especially kids who don't have the opportunities that so many of us were born with, then I hope you'll support Sierra Club Outdoors by supporting my run!
