THE STORY:

In Africa, it is estimated that between two and three million women are suffering and dying from fistulas as they have no money for proper medical treatment

A vaginal fistula is an abnormal opening between the vagina and another organ such as the bladder, urethra or rectum. This can result in incontinence (either leaking urine or feces from the vagina) which is very distressing for the patient. In developing countries this is caused by abnormally long labor which causes the vaginal tissue to deteriorate leading to an opening, or a fistula, into either the bladder or the rectum.

There is not a choice for a Cesarean childbirth in most third world countries and some women can spend from 2 to 15 days in labor, resulting in a Vesico Vaginal Fistula, an abnormal connection between the bladder and the vagina caused by obstructed labor during child birth. It's estimated that 2 - 3 million women in Africa suffer from Vesico Vaginal Fistulas.

We will be working with Dr. Darius R. Maggi, founder of the West Africa Fistula Foundation, by providing much needed medical treatment to women who are often ostracized by their communities due to this medical condition.

Long Island University School of Nursing is sending us, a number of nursing students, to Sierra Leone to help assist in:

Providing medical equipment, patient care and an optimal healing environment

Our plan:

-Assessing health care techniques

-Teaching new skills to nurses

-Role modeling

-Collaborative care

-Reassessment of skills

We will also be cleaning the physical environment including walls, floors, cupboards, toilets, sinks, equipment, beds and mattress and then developing a viable plan for a regular cleaning schedule in the hospital.

Funds will be used for:

-Medical Supplies

-Over the counter medications such as: Tylenol, Advil and Aspirin

-Blood Pressure Cuffs

-Stethoscopes

-Scrubs for health care workers

-Thermometers

-Patient hospital gowns

-Plane fares

-Supply shipping costs

Please help us in restoring health and dignity in Sierra Leone, one woman at a time.
