Signature Theater is building the largest new theater complex in New York City since Lincoln Center…three theaters designed by Frank Gehry on West 42nd Street…a truly amazing, once-every-few-generations event in the cultural life of this city. (Check out the video to the left.)
It’s a project that cost nearly $75 million to build and the last few million still has to be raised before the Opening on January 31, 2012.
Signature is enlisting our strong base of over 1,200 Alumni to play a critical and exciting role in bringing the vision of Signature Center to life. We are committed not to wait passively for large checks to be written; we want everyone to have a stake in the future success of this project and the amazing work that will be produced inside. As we quickly approach the Opening, we are asking our Artists to rally together, use our strength in numbers, and raise a lot of money before the holidays and throughout the Inaugural Season.
We are asking each Signature Artist to raise $2,000 to help build this new theater. There are over 1,200 Signature Alumni, so if everyone shoots for this goal, it would add up into a huge contribution toward making this dream a reality while also showing that artists can be a force in our community beyond just the stories they tell.
Here is what we are asking each Alumni for:
Ask 20 of your closest friends and family to step up and help Signature reach the goal.
Will you donate $100 to support Signature's effort?
That’s all. You can do it right here. Just click the orange "Donate" button. Easy.
Consider it your holiday gift to Signature. That’s all we want.
If you can only do $50, that's okay too. But if you can do $200, fantastic. Even more? Beyond incredible!
Just help Signature reach its goal of creating a one of a kind performance space that will bring artists and audiences together in ways never before possible.
Thanks SO much.
Apart from building this incredible new theater, what do you need to know about Signature that should make you feel great about supporting this effort?
Signature Theater is unique for three very important reasons:
It’s the only theater in America that devotes a full season to one playwright each year. You can go hear a Mozart festival, you can see a Scorcese film series, see retrospectives of Picasso’s work across time, but there was no way to experience the whole landscape of a playwright’s work until Signature.
And Signature is truly ‘theater for everyone’. As theater ticket prices climb further and further out of reach for most people, statistics clearly show that the audience is less diverse and older every year. We’re cutting off the next generation of theater goers and reaching fewer people outside the “1 percent”. Signature’s commitment that every seat for every show will be $25 for the next 10 years, is a bold and inspiring commitment to making the magic of theater affordable to all.
Signature has just launched Residency Five. This groundbreaking program provides unprecedented support for playwrights to build a body of work. Each playwright is guaranteed three full productions, health insurance, a cash award, a theatre-going stipend, and all the incredible resources of Signature, including access to their deep roster of playwrights, past and current. There is no program in the country like this, and the new work by Residency Five playwrights, starting with Katori Hall and Will Eno this season, is going to be incredible. And that’s only the beginning.
