The diagnostic process cost as much as $250,000.00 and often takes more than a year. The equipment required is so very expensive, and there is so much of it! A never ending cycle of change with progression. The toll it takes on both Victim and caregiver is overwhelming.
Richard participated in a drug trial where we met a fellow PALS named Dr. Mike Horn, a renowned genetic engineer. Mike and his wife Trisha flew in each month for 3 days. Every month his condition got worse, We invited them to stay with us,they did where we became very close. After the last visit, as they packed to return home, Mike could not say goodbye! He could not speak at all. We just cried. Sadly Mike passed away two weeks ago.
14 months dx to death.
Shortly after I learned of my classmate from San Marin high school, she too had just lost her husband to ALS.
We have seen suffering that we never knew existed. When there is no one left to turn to ALS Guardian Angels is there.
They shipped out a powerchair to Mike, a power chair to another PALS of ours named Jeff ..who lives nearby.
I have never known compassion such as ALSGA shows us everyday.
I am asking all of my friends, fellow Sign Language Interpreters, teachers and students to support me in my walk to support ALSGA
